The Lamella Chair was developed by Richards Stanisich for the Keep exhibition, curated by David Clarke and presented by the American Hardwood Export Council in 2025. Through hand stitching the project explored how timber could be worked to behave like a draped fabric. The piece highlights the beauty and the natural variation of American Maple through the layering of small shingles.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese armour, timber roofing and the protective shell of the armadillo, the chair transformed a discarded 1990s metal-framed seat through hundreds of individually hand-stitched timber shingles. Constructed in collaboration with film and theatre technician Meg Ashforth, the work reflects on repair, reuse, tactility, and the enduring value of handcraft.
